Where the GTA's sauna companies cluster

Which areas hold the most sauna companies?

The site files each company under one of its 71 areas. Willowdale holds the most, with 6 companies. Vaughan holds 4 and Richmond Hill holds 3. CityPlace, Mississauga and Caledon hold 2 each. Every other occupied area holds exactly one.

All three leading areas sit north of the old City of Toronto: Willowdale in North York, and Vaughan and Richmond Hill in York Region. The Google business labels on those 13 records say what kind of places they are. Ten carry the Google business label Sauna store and one carries Sauna. The other two, both filed under Willowdale, are a bathroom remodeler and an electrician. So the north end is mostly shops rather than building trades, which matters if your job needs framing or wiring as well as a product.

One block per company, from the site's listing data. Twenty further areas hold one company each.

What does "filed under Willowdale" mean?

An area on this site is a filing label, not a fence. The six Willowdale companies sit between about 4.5 and 11.3 km from the point the site uses as Willowdale's centre, according to the distance stored with each record. Two of them, Sauna Depot and North Valley Saunas, have Concord street addresses, and Magic Reno has a Thornhill address.

Street addresses give a second view. Of the 36 records with an address, 13 are inside the City of Toronto: 4 give Toronto, 4 North York, 3 Scarborough, 1 Etobicoke and 1 York. Six give Concord (4) or Vaughan (2), and 1 more gives Thornhill. Richmond Hill has 3, and Mississauga and Bolton have 2 each. Three records carry no street address.

Read together, the two views point the same way. The largest groups sit in North York and just across the city boundary in Vaughan and Richmond Hill, while downtown holds only four companies, filed under CityPlace, the Financial District and Queen West.

How many areas have no sauna company at all?

Of the 71 areas the site covers, 45 hold no company. The site sorts those 71 areas into 41 neighbourhoods, 23 cities and 7 districts, which describes where buyers live. The company map is much smaller.

Twenty areas hold a single company. Some are in the city, such as Queen West, the Financial District, Leaside, The Junction and Mimico. Others are whole towns or cities at the edge of the region, such as Brampton, Markham, Milton, Oakville, Pickering and Newmarket.

Two area pages list these companies: Toronto, which carries the six Willowdale companies, and Vaughan. A company filed under Caledon or Queen West still appears on the category pages and keeps its own profile. Working through the Saunas list is faster than searching by postal code.

The two categories overlap. Saunas holds 38 companies and Cold Plunge & Ice Baths holds 22, and 21 companies sit in both. The cold plunge buying guide names the plunge sellers in the two busiest areas.

The site's areas range from a few streets to whole cities, so the same count can mean very different distances.

What is an area's average rating worth?

Very little on its own, because each rests on a handful of records. Willowdale's 4.98 covers the 5 rated companies of its 6. Richmond Hill's 4.9 covers 2 of 3, and Caledon's 4.85 covers 2. CityPlace and Mississauga each have one rated company and one without a rating.

In 14 of the 20 single-company areas, the average is simply that one company's score. The Beaches shows 2.3 and several others show 5, and each of those describes one business, not a neighbourhood. The other 6 single-company areas show no rating at all: Brampton, the Financial District, Leaside, Mimico, Port Perry and Queen West.

An average over one to three records can move a long way when a company collects a few new reviews. The methodology page explains how the site's own ranking handles thin review counts and where the records come from.

What does the map not tell you?

The index records the address on each business listing. It holds nothing about how far a company travels, what it charges to get there, or whether it takes jobs across the region. A company in Caledon may quote a job in Scarborough; the map cannot say whether it would.

It also cannot say what sits behind an address. A record might be a showroom with stock, an office with a warehouse elsewhere, or a business run from a truck. Companies move, so a phone call is what confirms a record is still current.

For an outdoor sauna, distance has a price. Great Canadian Saunas of Flesherton lists white cedar barrel saunas from $5,495 to $9,495 and says its prices include delivery and professional installation within 500 km of Flesherton. Backyard Canada lists Canadian Timber barrel saunas at $7,509 for the Harmony and $8,226 for the Tranquility. Its own FAQ talks about hiring a carpenter to build the sauna kit, so delivery and assembly are separate questions there. For a distant buyer, which of those two models a seller follows matters more than the area on its address. The outdoor sauna cost guide lists the other costs, and the condo sauna guide covers the downtown case. SaunaIndex does not sell saunas or plunges and earns nothing from the retailers or companies named here; the about page explains how the site is run.

Frequently asked questions

Which GTA area has the most sauna companies?

Willowdale, with 6 of the 39 companies in this index. Vaughan follows with 4 and Richmond Hill with 3. Those six Willowdale companies sit up to about 11 km from the area's centre point, and two have Concord addresses, so the cluster runs along the Vaughan and North York border.

Are there sauna companies in downtown Toronto?

A few. CityPlace has 2 companies, one rated 4 and one with no rating. Queen West and the Financial District have 1 each, neither with a rating on record. Compared with the north end, downtown supply is thin.

How many of the areas this site covers hold a sauna company?

26 of the 71 areas hold at least one company, and 45 hold none. Six areas hold more than one: Willowdale, Vaughan, Richmond Hill, CityPlace, Mississauga and Caledon. The other 20 hold exactly one.

Does a high area average mean the companies there are better?

No. Willowdale's 4.98 averages the 5 rated companies of its 6, and Caledon's 4.85 rests on 2. An average over two or three records moves a long way on a few reviews, and the index holds no job history to check it against.

Does an address tell me who will come to my house?

No. The index records where a company's address is, and holds nothing about service areas, travel charges or delivery reach. Ask about that on the first call.
